Tata Steel Celebrates its Centenary Year with the People of Jamshedpur

Tata Steel, as a part of its centenary celebrations, has planned a four-day festival’ ‘Shatrang’, for the people of Jamshedpur, which has supported it throughout its century of existence from January 2-5, 2008. The objective of the celebration is to involve and share with the entire city, the joy of completing a hundred years.

‘Shatrang’, symbolizing hundred colours, includes talent hunt contests for school children, a fun-fare with game and food stalls, joy rides, folk dance performances and a musical concert to mention a few.

While an inter school contest, ‘Voice of Jamshedpur’, for children of class VIII-XII, marks the start of the festival, music tableaus comprising English and Hindi bands have been arranged to play at various locations in the city, adding to the spirit of festivity. The winners of the ‘Voice of Jamshedpur’ in both categories- Hindi and English, will then share the stage with Shankar, Ehsaan & Loy, at a grand concert at the JRD Sports Complex on January 5, 2007.

A ‘Shatrang Mela’ at Gopal Maidan, sporting a carnival spirit, has been planned for January 2, 2007. Gotipua from Orissa, folk dances from Jharkhand and Bihar, folk martial arts dance by Sapphire Creations of Kolkata, Hassya Kavi Sammelan and a magic show will also contribute to the festive spirit of the fun-fare. In addition to the ‘Shatrang Mela’, a ‘Bistupur Street Carnival’ is also on the anvil, scheduled for January 4, 2007, with music bands performing on tableaus, food stalls and stalls with portrait artists, micro-calligraphy, carnival games and laser shows.

One of the major attractions of the four-day mega-event is a ‘Neo-Classical/ Fusion’ musical concert at the XLRI Auditorium on January 3, 2007, with some of India’s leading artists. Entertainment programmes at all the community development centres of the company will be held. On the morning of January 5, 2007, a ‘Shatrang Centenary Run’ will be held.

The grand finale to the four-day long Centenary celebrations, is a concert on January 5, 2007, where prominent performers, such as, Shankar Mahadevan, Ehsaan, Loy and Mahalakshmi Iyer will rule the stage.
