Mr Baijal was born in 1948. He is a graduate in Metallurgical Engineering from Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh in 1969. He completed his Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management from XLRI, Jamshedpur and attended an Advanced Management Programme in CEDEP, France.
He joined Tata Steel in 1969 as a Graduate Trainee. He is currently the Vice President& Tata Steel Group Director, Global Mineral Resources. He has also served the company as the Vice President, Raw Materials and Iron Making and also Human Resources.
He has extensive work experience in the Ore Mines and Quarries Division of Tata Steel. As Resident Director of Tata Refractories Limited from 1993 to January, 1996, he was wholly in charge of the Plant and its allied operations. As Senior Divisional Manager (Modernisation) Tata Steel from 1990-1991, he was involved in planning and executing new Steel Making and Continuous Casting Complex for Tata Steel and other major expansion projects. As General Manager Ipitata Sponge Iron Plant, he worked out a viable and economical package for the Plant along with LURGI transforming the Plant into a profit-oriented unit.
Mr Baijal is the President of Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers, Jamshedpur Chapter and the Chairman of CII’s National Committee on Mining (2004 - '06). He is the Member of the National Council on Infrastructure and Core Industry, Mining Machinery & Construction Equipment Division, CII, Management committee of Federation of Indian Mineral Industries, SMI, USA, and Mineral Advisory Committee for Government of Jharkhand (2003 - '05). He is a Special Invitee in the National Mineral Advisory Council, Government of India (2004 - '05).Mr Baijal won the Tata Gold Medal Award in Mineral Beneficiation in the year 2005, the Mishrilal Jain Environmental Award in 2001, the JG Kumaramangalam Memorial Award of Coal India in 2001, and the National Metallurgist Award in 1986.
