Mr Om Narayan was born on 5th January, 1951. A mechanical engineer from Bhagalpur University, he was a Gold Medalist in his Branch. He also completed PGDBM from XLRI, Jamshedpur in 1980.
Mr Om Narayan joined Tata Steel as a Graduate Trainee in 1972 and occupied various technical and managerial positions both in the Steel Works and in the West Bokaro Collieries. His experience ranges from maintenance of Rolling Mills, Heavy Earth Moving machineries, Blast Furnace, LD Shops and other major Steel Plant equipment, to operation and maintenance of Power Houses. Presently, as the Vice President (Shared Services), he is responsible for the overall maintenance (Electrical & Mechanical), Power Systems & Utilities (Oxygen and other Industrial Gases, Byproduct Gases, Compressed Air, Process Steam and Power), Environment and Occupational Health, and Spares manufacturing, Procurement, By-Product Sales and other Services of the Steel Works, Jamshedpur.
He has visited Japan, Russia, Thailand, Germany, Spain, UK, USA, Netherlands etc. to see different Steel Plants and Mines Operation.
For the first time coal ash was reduced from 17% to 16% at West Bokaro under his leadership. His major achievements include propagation/implementation of TPM and Six Sigma principles, implementation of Plant Maintenance Module of SAP, ERP package, improving the availability of Production units through condition based maintenance, improved life of spares, reducing the cost of spares/indigenization of spares, improving the specific lubricant consumptions, reduction of Maintenance Cost and driving the practices of integrated maintenance in Tata Steel. He presently holds the position of the Chairman, Mjunction Services Ltd., Director, IEL, Chairman, Divisional Implementation Committee, Safety, Tata Steel, Leader, NSC Steering Committee for implementation of World Class Maintenance in Steel Works and Chairman, Indian Institute of Welding, Jamshedpur Chapter. Moreover, he is an active Rotarian and Past-President of Rotary Club of Jamshedpur West.
