| Mr. Rata Tata was born on 28th December 1936
in Mumbai. He graduated in 1962 from Cornell University with
a degree in Architecture and Structural Engineering.
Following the advice of Mr. JRD Tata, he joined the family
business turning down a job offer from IBM. He began his
work on the ground level along with the blue-collar workers
of the company and today Ratan Tata holds the position of
Chairman of the Tata Group.
In 1981 Mr. Ratan Tata was made the Chairman of the Tata
industries. He became responsible for the proper strategy
planning of the company and to promote the new ventures in
high technology businesses. It was in 1991 when he finally
inherited the group chairmanship from Mr. JRD Tata and
introduced his team of young managers.
His string of major achievements that have added to the
glory of the Tata Group include the addition of Tata
Consultancy Services to its public list and Tata Motors
being listed to the prestigious New York Stock Exchange. On
January 31st, 2007, Mr. Ratan Tata pulled off one of the
biggest acquisitions in Indian corporate history. Tata Sons
acquired Corus Group - an Anglo-Dutch steel and aluminium
producer. This merger made Mr. Ratan Tata a celebrated
personality in the Indian corporate circle and also brought
into existence the fifth largest steel producing entity in
the world.

The Government of India honoured Mr. Ratan Tata with a
‘Padma Bhushan’ award on the 50th Republic day Celebration
of India. He serves in senior capacities in various
organisations in India including the National Council of
Applied Economic Research. He is also a member of the
central board of the Reserve Bank of India and of the Prime
Minister's Council on Trade and Industry. |
